01. FRANK MORRISON: A MANNERIST APPROACH

Sometimes you find an artist whose work seems to contain several of your favorite conversations at once.
Frank Morrison is one of them.
For the final weekend of his Brooklyn Artist Residency, Morrison opens his Industry City studio and presents a new body of work inspired by Mannerism and Cubism, centered around identity, imagination and urban communities.
But his story starts somewhere very different.
Morrison’s visual language grew partly out of 1980s hip-hop, graffiti and breakdancing, eventually developing into paintings filled with elongated bodies, gesture, rhythm and movement.
The work may be still.
The people inside it rarely feel that way.

Season III International Residency Exhibition

How quickly do we think we understand someone simply by looking?
That question sits underneath Subject to…, the new international residency exhibition at NARS Foundation.
Ten artists work across sculpture, performance, photography, installation and textiles, examining the systems people use to interpret bodies, identity and belonging.
Fashion participates in those same systems every day.
Clothing can communicate occupation, gender, class, subculture, confidence, resistance or belonging before conversation even begins.
And sometimes the most interesting clothing refuses to communicate exactly what the viewer expects.

03. BK LOVES MJ

🎧 THE STREET CULTURE PICK
Some of the best fashion research has no runway.
Spike Lee’s annual BK Loves MJ celebration returns to Fort Greene Park with DJ Spinna, dancing and a Jordan Brand partnership.
Thousands of people gathering outside to move for hours also creates something else:
A living street-style study.
Sneakers.
Shorts.
Tanks.
Cropped silhouettes.
Bags.
Hats.
Sunglasses.
Movement clothes.
And unlike a styled fashion shoot, every choice has to work in the real world.
Heat. Sweat. Sitting. Standing. Dancing. Walking. Carrying things.
That makes an event like this surprisingly valuable to anyone designing clothes meant to move.

🎬 THE NIGHTLIFE CROSSOVER
This one doesn’t exactly hide its intentions.
Music. Fashion. Film.
The late-night event transforms 9 Bob Note through screens, staging, pop-up performance and dance, creating an environment where fashion isn’t separated from sound, lighting, bodies or motion.
That’s the interesting part.
The best nightlife spaces are rarely just rooms where music happens.
They build a temporary world.
For a few hours, everyone inside understands the visual language.

STILL ON OUR RADAR
Iris van Herpen: Sculpting the Senses
The extraordinary Iris van Herpen exhibition remains open this week, bringing together more than 140 haute couture creations at the intersection of fashion, science, technology, craft and material experimentation.
We featured it previously, so it doesn’t need to lead this week’s edition.
But it remains one of the strongest fashion exhibitions currently in New York.
Some things stay on the Radar longer than a week.
